Jamal Musiala’s injury has been officially diagnosed as a fractured fibula – a significant blow for Bayern Munich and Germany.
The 22-year-old playmaker sustained the injury during the Club World Cup quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, following a high-impact collision with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Musiala Injury: What Happened?
The injury occurred just before halftime. Musiala collided with Donnarumma, rolled off the pitch in visible discomfort, and was replaced by Serge Gnabry for the second half.
He has since returned to Munich and will undergo surgery, with a recovery period expected to last at least four months. A return in November 2025 is currently the most optimistic timeline.
Musiala Diagnose: What is the Fibula?
The fibula, or calf bone, runs along the outer side of the lower leg from just below the knee to the ankle. It is the smaller of the two lower leg bones, while the tibia (shinbone) is the main weight-bearing bone.
Musiala’s fracture occurred near the ankle, an area that’s critical for movement, balance, and acceleration.
Neuer vs. Donnarumma: Responsibility and Reaction
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticised Donnarumma’s reckless challenge, saying:
“He took a risk. You can’t go in like that.”
Although initially shaken, Donnarumma later posted a public message of support on social media:
“All my prayers are with you, Jamal.”
