At the Australian Open in Melbourne, matches were suspended for three hours due to excessive heat.
While the temperature reached 35 degrees in Melbourne, the tournament officials decided to temporarily stop the matches. It happened at 14:15 local time.
The matches continued only on the three main courts, where the stadium roofing system works.
The suspension of matches is determined by various terms: the strength of the sun, the temperature of the air in the shade, the humidity, and the strength of the wind – all these indicators reached their highest point today in Melbourne.
Before the matches were stopped, the tennis players were allowed to enjoy a special right provided by the protocol and take a cold shower during the break.
Also, during the changeovers, the players constantly used ice towels.
The matches are renewed at 17:00. According to the organizers, the conditions will be checked.
