Berrettini tries to keep optimism

Matteo Berrettini

The 26-year-old Italian tennis player spoke about the past 2022 and upcoming 2023 seasons.

Berrettini’s final match of the season was in the Davis Cup semifinals, paired with Fabio Fognini, where the Italian duo lost in straight sets to the Canadians.

At the start of this year’s season, Matteo was in sixth place in the rankings, but it turned out to be a nightmare year for him. The Italian practically spent the whole year fighting injuries and Covid.

Hopes for new season

Nevertheless, Matteo Berrettini plans to start the new season in a completely different way:

“It’s not easy, to sum up, the 2022 season. Considering all the hard moments I went through, I wouldn’t say it was a bad season. I had a surgery on my hand, I continued to play, then I got Covid during the most important tournament for me (at Wimbledon).”

“I work hard to stay optimistic. Psychologically, it is very difficult to come to terms with the fact that after a successful 2021, you face so many problems and you are not able to performance at the proper level. I don’t feel bad about playing against Canada in the Davis Cup because the team thought it would be better that way. It would have been nice if Fabio and I had won this match, but I’m proud of our fight,

At the beginning of 2023, Matteo Berrettini has a big goal ahead of him: he has to repeat the semi-finals at the Australian Open.
