Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that the club expects to receive the verdict on its 115 charges of alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules within a month. The highly anticipated decision follows a hearing that took place before an independent commission between September and December 2024.
If found guilty, City could face severe consequences, ranging from a significant points deduction to possible relegation from the Premier League. However, the club has continuously denied any wrongdoing and remains confident in its defense.
Manchester City Financial Charges – Guardiola’s Take on the Situation
Speaking on the matter, Guardiola, who recently extended his contract until 2027, reiterated the club’s stance and the scrutiny they face from critics. Earlier this season, he expressed frustration with the ongoing allegations, claiming that some people wanted to see Manchester City “wiped from the face of the Earth.”
When asked whether City’s record-breaking £180m investment in the January transfer window was influenced by concerns over a potential transfer ban, Guardiola responded, “In one month, I think there will be a verdict and a sentence. After that, we will see my opinion of what happened so far.”
City’s Heavy Winter Investment
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the charges, Manchester City was one of the most active clubs in the winter transfer window, securing the signings of four players:
- Abdoukodir Khusanov (Uzbekistan defender) – £33.6m from Lens (January 20)
- Vitor Reis (Brazilian teenager) – £29.6m from Palmeiras (January 21)
- Omar Marmoush (Egyptian forward) – £63m from Eintracht Frankfurt (January 23)
- Nico Gonzales (Spanish U-21 midfielder) – £50m from Porto
This £180m expenditure was the second-highest spending spree in a January window by a Premier League club, only behind Chelsea’s £275m outlay in 2023.
Guardiola Defends City’s Spending
Manchester City’s recent struggles, which have left them fifth in the Premier League and 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, prompted speculation about the reasoning behind their aggressive recruitment. However, Guardiola dismissed the idea that the spending was tied to anything other than strengthening the squad.
He also pointed out that City’s financial approach remains balanced due to their profitable sales in recent seasons, including the departures of Cole Palmer to Chelsea and Liam Delap to Ipswich for a combined £57.5m.
“My words will not convince people,” Guardiola admitted. “I know with this club it is always ‘just about the money.’ But in the past five years, we are the last among the top six for net spend. Even after what we have spent in this transfer window, we are away from Chelsea, (Manchester) United, Arsenal, Tottenham. Even from Liverpool. The only reason why is we sell a lot in the last seasons.”
