ATP honors the most outstanding players every year. This year, the list of nominees included such successful tennis players as Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and others.
Prizes are in different categories. Here are the winners of the 2022 ATP Awards:
ATP Newcomer of the year
19-year-old Danish tennis player Holger Rune earned this honorary title.
He had a brilliant clay season. He became champion for the first time in Munich, defeating Alexander Zverev on the way. He also reached the quarterfinals of French Open.
The Masters trophy has already entered Rune’s cabinet. He had an unbelievable week in Paris, beating five members of the Top 10. In the final match, he beat Novak Djokovic himself.
Finally, Holger Rune has collected three titles this season. As a result, he takes the 11th position in the world rankings and is one step away from the top 10.
ATP comeback of the year
Borna Coric had the most impressive tennis tour in 2022.
The year 2021 turned out to be extremely difficult for Croatia. He made remarkable progress year after year before requiring shoulder surgery in May. This kept him out of the competition until the end of the season.
Coric did not give up. He overcame the toughest period and returned to the court with a bang: He won the Cincinnati Masters.
Along the way, he defeated five seeded players, including Rafa Nadal, Auger-Aliassime, and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
At the start of this year’s season, Coric was outside the Top 250. In the end, he finished the season in 26th place.
ATP most improved player of the year
This nomination is not a special surprise either. In 2022, it was Carlos Alcaraz Garfia, who had the deepest and most visible progress.
The Spaniard has won two 500-point titles, two Masters, and, most importantly, a Grand Slam title. As a result, he ended the 2022 season at the top of the rankings.
Besides, He became the youngest number-one in tennis history.
This is the first time since 2003, that no big 4 players have finished the season in first place. Andy Roddick was the last player.
Alcaraz’s competitors in this nomination were Jack Draper, Holger Rune, and Maxime Cressy.
ATP coach of the year
It would have been more surprising if this prize had been given to another person, not Juan Carlos Ferrero.
The legendary Spanish tennis player continues to raise a new generation after the end of his playing career. He has his academy in Alicante, and Carlos Alcaraz is its graduate.
What Alcaraz and Ferrero have achieved together is not just the result of this year’s hard work. They have been cooperating for years and will continue to do so.
“It was an amazing season. Years of hard work paid off. And now I received this magnificent award. I am happy that I was named the best coach of the year. Thank you all so much for your support.”
– Juan Carlos Ferrero.
It should also be noted that Juan Ferrero’s father died during the tournament in Barcelona. Nevertheless, he did not miss a single match of his apprentice.
ATP Fans Favorite
After 19 years of Roger Federer’s dominance, this category has a new winner. In 2022, Rafael Nadal won unconditionally and by a large margin in the fan poll.
The Spaniard is the fourth to win this title. Before Federer, Gustavo Kuerten and Marat Safin won this award.
Nadal is the only tennis player who received awards in all categories from the ATP.
