Terry, Evra, Del Piero, Puyol and Van der Sar among football icons participating in charity event in Lisbon | Setanta Sports

Portugal Legends vs World Legends – Luis Figo, Michael Owen and Kaka will feature in a star-studded fixture between Portugal Legends and World Legends in Lisbon on Monday 15th September.

Terry, Evra, Del Piero, Puyol, and Van der Sar are among the football icons participating in the charity event.

The Legends Charity Game, hosted by Sport Global, is aiming to raise over €1 million for selected charities, including the Ukrainian Red Cross, attracting more than 50,000 supporters to the game with millions more following the action from across the globe via worldwide broadcast partners.

Organisers Sport Global will hold the Legends Charity Game annually, ahead of the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, growing the event year-on-year to create a lasting legacy through its charitable donations.

Portugal Legends vs World Legends

Figo will skipper a home team, consisting of household Portuguese names, including Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho, Jose Bosingwa, Deco, Nani and Nuno Gomes.

The World Legends is filled with icons of the sport. Premier League legends Edwin van der Sar, Petr Cech, John Terry, Patrice Evra and Michael Owen will all be in action, along with other European greats such as Carles Puyol, Gaizka Mendieta, Youri Djorkaeff, Gheorghe Hagi, Alessandro Del Piero and Henrik Larsson – while South American players include Cafu, Javier Zanetti, Roberto Carlos, Kaka and Javier Saviola.

An incredible line-up of football heroes sees the prospect of Puyol and Larsson come up against their former Barcelona team-mate and fellow 2006 Champions League winner Deco, with French World Cup winners Christian Karembeu and Djorkaeff playing alongside 1998 World Cup final foes Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

Both members of Chelsea’s hugely successful mid-2000s centre-back duo of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho will be in action, albeit on opposite sides. Similarly, Nani will hope to get one over his former Manchester United colleagues Edwin van der Sar and Patrice Evra.

Charity Event in Lisbon

Tickets are available to purchase via the official Legends Charity Game website.

Stats Perform is the official data and highlights partner for the game, with Opta providing a range of data-led assets to broadcast and media partners.

The fixture will also serve as the opening event of this year’s SBC Summit. Either Sporting’s José Alvalade Stadium or Benfica’s Estádio da Luz will host the game, depending on the respective clubs’ Champions League schedules.

Champions League and Ballon d’Or winner Luis Figo said: “It’s always a pleasure to come back to my country and play football, especially when wearing the national team colours!

“I hope to see a full stadium in my hometown for this amazing Legends charity event in Lisbon and raise funds for important charity causes.”

World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner Kaka said: “As a footballer, winning is part of who you are — it drives your passion, your performance, and your pursuit of excellence.

“I’ve been fortunate to lift the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and the Ballon d’Or and many other titles and I’ve always taken that responsibility seriously. But being invited to play in the Legends Charity Game is special. Here, the real victory isn’t measured by goals or results — it’s about unity, purpose, and giving back.

“I can’t wait to be on the pitch in Lisbon and celebrate with everyone“

Sport Global Founder & CEO Rasmus Sojmark said: “We are taking our charitable endeavours up a notch this year with the spectacular football match in order to raise a lot of money for some very worthy causes.

“By tying the match in with the SBC Summit in Lisbon the same week, we have found a way for the communities around football and business to help other communities that are facing unimaginable hardships.”

The four chosen charities are the Portuguese Red Cross, International Alert (a global peacekeeping charity), Caritas Portugal (a Lisbon-based charity offering critical support to marginalised communities), and The Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS).

Director General of URCS Maksym Dotsenko added: “The war in Ukraine continues, and unfortunately, millions of people still need support every day.

“We have no right to stop. Initiatives like the Legends Charity Game are not just about the funds raised. They are about compassion, and the understanding that the world stands by us. They are about solidarity that transforms into real help for those going through the toughest times. We are grateful to everyone who takes part.”
